Sanctum

Sanctum is one those films that I was excited to see for many reasons. I am a big fan of cave films so I was looking forward to this one due to water in a cave and I also like claustrophobic films. At the end of this film, I learned that Sanctum drags quite a bit throughout and has some very dry characters. Frankly it is one of the most boring Action/Adventures film's I have ever seen and it is no doubt one of the more disappointing films of 2011.
Sanctum tells the story of a group of explorers who go to check out a cave in Papua, New Guinea. A big storm comes causing the cave to flood. This makes it a task for the explorers to get out of the cave safely.
What hurts this film is how terrible the characters are. The characters are all dry and they seem to often turn the film in the wrong direction. They also don't do all that much and when they do something, they are quite unlikeable because every one of them seems to have a bad attitude and they don't seem to like anything. The worst character of all them is Frank ( Richard Roxburgh). Out of all the characters, he is the least likable and not the best character to put in the lead. He yells, starts a lot of fights and is very hard to root for. Frankly, all the characters are pretty bad and hard to root for.
Another thing that hurts the film is the lack of action scenes. There is barely any action here and a film with this type of plot should have some. So then we are left with a lot of bad characters and nothing else much happening so the film is dull and the reason why I fell asleep while watching this.
The only real highlight of the film is the cave itself. It is a very cool cave and is a good setting with some atmosphere for the movie. They should have done more with the cave setting.
Sanctum is a pretty dry film with bad characters, lacks a lot of action and I think is one of the biggest disappointments of 2011. Sanctum shows us how a film with a lot of potential can fall flat and also shows how important quality characters can be in a film. I would recommend that you skip this one.
